Whether you consider it puerile – or just quite funny – the people of Brussels seem a tad obsessed with peeing.

First up is the famous Manneken Pis (1619). Stories abound of a lost boy found naked in the streets, or a brave lad extinguishing a burning fuse with his urine and saving the city from destruction. Seems this is all nonsense, and it’s just a surprisingly small statue of a chubby boy relieving himself.

Renowned for being naked, he actually has 200 natty outfits which are changed throughout the year. Here he is as Dracula… and here are some more of his dress up options.

Above the boy is a peeing space invader by French graph artist Invader.

Ensuring the boys don’t have all the urinary fun in Brussels is Jeanneke Pis (1985), who wees all day to the benefit of cancer research – any coins in her fountain go to a good cause.

And there’s a peeing dog (1998)! He’s quite fun too.

I covered two thirds of Scotland for the Rough Guide to Britain, which is out now in a redesigned format, with lots of pretty pics.

And here’s the Rough Guide to Rome, out in April, written by Martin Dunford who founded Rough Guides, and edited by me.

I worked on it as a writer, photographer and editor, wandering round the Lake District, the Midlands and eastern England with my tent. Here are some suggestions for wild camping:

Cairngorms National Park Camp by the river amongst ancient Caledonian pine trees
Calgary Bay, Mull Beautiful pitches on machair grassland next to the beach
Dartmoor National Park Camp on Common Land on barren and beautiful Dartmoor

Knoydart Peninsula Pitch a tent just behind the Long Beach, on moorland or in the woods. Britain’s remotest place!
Sandwood Bay, near Cape Wrath Rig your tent on this dune-backed sandy beach
Summer Isles Sea kayak to the islands and you’re likely to have the turquoise shallows and white-sand beaches to yourself
